FarmBox Foods, a Colorado-based developer of hydroponic modular container-based vertical farms, has partnered with Colorado-based electricity cooperative CORE Electric Cooperative to launch a reforestation program using vertical farming.
According to the partnership, CORE Electric has signed an agreement to grow trees in FarmBox’s Vertical Hydroponic Farm (VHF), the latter’s container-based vertical farming solution, and rehabilitate forests under its service area which covers 5,000 square miles along the Colorado Front Range. CORE plans to plant 15,000 blue spruces and ponderosa pines within the first three years of the program.
FarmBox Foods has successfully grown tree seedlings and saplings in its VHF previously in 2021. The company reports that the VHF purchased by CORE is the first farm dedicated to growing trees. According to the terms of the agreement, the company will operate the tree farm at its home base in Sedalia and will transfer them to hoop houses to allow the root systems to grow before planting. The company will also conduct research on growing parameters including nutrient dosing, lighting, and drought resistance.
