California-based space travel and space launch company Rocket Lab has been selected by NASA to launch its time-resolved observation of precipitation structure and storm intensity with a constellation of smallsats (TROPICS) satellites.
Spread across two launches, this mission will take place no earlier than May 2023 with each launch carrying two cubesats and are expected to launch from the company’s launch complex in Virginia.
Rocket Lab was selected for this mission after Astra —the initial partner for TROPICS missions—was unable to get its Rocket 4 launch vehicle developed in time after its failed mission with Rocket 3.3
