Li-Cycle expands its operations in Monroe County, New York

Geographic expansion

  • Li-Cycle, a Canadian lithium-ion battery manufacturer and recycler, announced its expansion of the US operations in Monroe County, New York under an agreement with New York State, through the performance-based Excelsior Jobs Tax Credit Program, that will approve USD 13.5 million in tax credits to the company in exchange for its commitment to bringing about 270 jobs to Rochester.

  • This expansion efforts entail a new facility known as the Rochester Hub, which is under construction on a 41-acre land (formerly known as Eastman Business Park South) in addition to Li-Cycle's first US Spoke facility with a shredding capacity of 5,000 tons of lithium-ion batteries a year, currently operating in the same area. The Hub facility will use Li-cycle’s proprietary technology to convert the black mass—the primary product of the Spoke facility, containing highly valuable critical metals, such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel—into battery-grade materials.

  • The Hub facility will also receive black mass from spoke locations across the country and is expected to process battery material equivalent to approximately 225,000 electric vehicles per year, upon its completion in 2023.
