Umiami, a French plant-based meat startup specializing in the development of whole-cuts, acquired a former Unilever production site located in Duppigheim, France.
Following the opening of the company’s innovation center and pilot plant in June, this will be Umiami’s first commercial-scale production facility featuring 14,000 sq meters of space and an annual production capacity of up to 22,000 tonnes of alternative meat and seafood.
According to the company, this is the only facility in the world with the capability to produce plant-based whole-cuts of any type of meat or seafood. Production is slated to begin in 2H 2023.
Analyst QuickTake: Umiami raised USD 30 million in what was claimed to be Europe’s largest-ever Series A round in April 2022. The funds raised were planned for the opening of its innovation center as well as an additional plant to cope with the increased demand for products. With the acquisition of this production site, the company will be able to surpass its previous target of producing 15,000 tonnes of meat by 2025.
