Ferme d’hiver (also known as Winter Farm), a Quebec-based vertical farming company, raised CAD 46 million (~USD 34 million) in venture funding. The round saw participation from Quebec Government and Investissement Québec, along with new investors Desjardins, Farm Credit Canada, Financière Agricole du Québec, Capital Financière Agricole, and two private partners.
The company plans to use this funding to build a vertical farm for strawberry production in Vaudreuil, expecting to produce nearly one million kilograms of strawberries each year. The company acquired Les Serres Vaudreuil, formerly owned by the St-Denis family, to carry out this project in Vaudreuil and supervise operations and production.
Furthermore, the business also intends to expand its two existing farms by adding six 600 sqm vertical farms in the upcoming months. The new farms will enable Winter Farm to use 20 to 25 times less space than open field production, recycle 90% of irrigation water, and produce less greenhouse gas.
