California-based TransAstra, a company specializing in developing solutions related to orbital logistics and space resources, has secured funding via two federal Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) programs designed to expedite the development of critical technologies affecting the aerospace industry and subsequently government missions.
For its first contract, the company was awarded funding by NASA for its Mini Bee Capture Bag (MBCB)–a solution for space debris management. In phase 1 of NASA’s SBIR Ignite program, TransAstra will design and develop an inflatable bag designed to provide end-of-life disposal services and active debris removal.
Under the DoD STTR award, the company will modify its Sutter Technology, a proprietary Optimized Matched Filter Tracking technology by TransAstra which is utilized for space domain awareness. While Sutter Technology is currently a ground-based operation, the funding will help in developing an in-space solution.
