Nikola Motor Company (Nikola), a developer of heavy-duty battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV), entered into a strategic partnership with Plug Power, a pioneer of fuel-cell systems, to scale up the hydrogen market.
Under the agreement, Plug Power will purchase up to 75 Nikola Tre FCEVs over the next three years for customers in North America, with the initial truck deliveries beginning in 2023.
As part of the collaboration, Plug Power will also supply Nikola with 30 metric tons of hydrogen per day as its initial offering, scaling up to 150 metric tons, leveraging the latter’s hydrogen liquefaction system for Nikola’s recently announced Arizona Hydrogen Hub.
The two companies are also involved in a 125 metric-tons per day green hydrogen agreement starting from January 2023, with the alternative of increasing volume over time allowing Nikola to source hydrogen from multiple locations.
