Crop One, a hydroponics-based vertical farming company offering herbicide and pesticide-free leafy greens, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), a biomedical research institution, received a USD 1.5 million grant from the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR; a non-profit funding organization for research addressing the challenges in food and agriculture) to develop plant-based dietary protein via controlled environment agriculture (CEA).
Crop One and CSHL researchers will use the funds to develop aquatic plants of the Lemnaceae (Lemna) family with high protein content to provide high-quality protein for human consumption, along with the contribution from the Martienssen lab.
The project is expected to meet the primary goals of crop diversity and resilience set forth by the Seeding Solutions program at FFAR since it offers a new dietary protein source.
