Raven SR, a producer of hydrogen-rich syngas, Chevron New Energies, and Hyzon Motors (Hyzon), a Nasdaq-listed developer of commercial hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs), announced a collaboration on the deployment of a waste-to-hydrogen facility in Richmond, California.
The proposed facility will be owned by a newly formed entity, Raven SR S1. Raven SR will serve as the operator of the facility which is expected to come online during the first quarter of 2024. The equity stake of Raven SR S1 will be held among the three companies, with Chevron to hold a 50% stake, Raven SR a 30% stake, and the remaining 20% held by Hyzon.
The waste-to-hydrogen facility will convert 99 wet tons of organic waste per day from Republic Services’ West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill using the company’s non-combustion steam/ CO2 reforming process, producing nearly 2,400 tons of green hydrogen per day.
The collaboration will allow Chevron to sell its share of hydrogen in Bay Area and Northern California fueling stations, while Hyzon plans to provide refueling for hydrogen fuel cell trucks at a hydrogen hub in Richmond.
Analyst QuickTake: This strategic collaboration was initially announced in December 2022, following Hyzon’s investment of USD 10 million to deploy Raven SR’s waste-to-hydrogen facility in Richmond, California. Hyzon had already invested USD 8.5 million with plans to invest the remaining USD 1.5 million through 2023, for an approximate stake of 20% in Raven SR S1.
