Meta acquires optics and photonics research lab, Gary Sharp Innovations, to improve viewing optics for its XR devices

M&A

  • Meta announced the acquisition of Gary Sharp Innovations, an optics and photonics research lab, to improve viewing optics for its VR headsets and AR glasses. The company entered a share purchase agreement with Gary Sharp Innovations in June 2022. The financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

  • The acquisition will allow Meta to access multiple patents; patent applications filed by Gary Sharp Innovations and a portion of their staff will help to leverage their expertise in AR technology. This follows Meta’s spate of acquisitions in the XR space, including that of smart eyewear company, Luxexcel, in December 2022 and VR haptic startup, Lofelt, in September 2022 .

  • Founded in 2017, Gary Sharp Innovations focuses on researching optics and photonics for the development of optical filters and optics-related technologies. The filters are used for a range of applications such as photography, AR glasses, and VR headsets.
