Luminar Technologies, a manufacturer of LiDAR sensors, has acquired an HD mapping and localization technology company, Civil Maps, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition took place in Q2 2022 and was disclosed at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It will facilitate the company to enhance its product offerings further.
Luminar Technologies intends to integrate the assets acquired into its LiDAR sensors and safety and driving assist tools system, “Sentinel,” which is currently in development for LiDAR-equipped vehicles. The company will use the technology to build automatically updating HD 3D maps from Luminar-powered production vehicles.
Civil Maps, founded in 2015, provides HD maps and localization technology for autonomous vehicles and safety and driver assistance functions.

The company’s other recent acquisitions include chip design and component suppliers, Black Forest Engineering (2018) and OptoGration (July 2021) , and high-performance laser manufacturer, Freedom Photonics (March 2022).
