Apple reportedly halts development of AR glasses indefinitely citing technical challenges; focuses efforts on MR headset instead

Product updates

  • Apple reportedly halted development of its AR glasses citing technical challenges, with the company instead focusing on reducing the cost of its MR headset which is yet to be launched.

  • The company’s AR glasses were expected to be released after the debut of its MR headset, for which a lower-cost version is set to be developed by 2024 or early 2025. A Bloomberg report stated that Apple’s initial MR headset will feature its M2 CPU used on desktops, a dedicated chip for handling AR and VR visuals, and a high-resolution display with more than 10 camera sensors. The device was estimated to cost approximately USD 3,000.

  • The company ultimately aims to replace the iPhone by moving the smartphone's functionality to a wearer's field of view on its AR glasses, although development on this is currently halted.
