Wasted, a Vermont-based startup that converts human waste into fertilizer, has raised USD 7.5 million in seed funding from Collaborative Fund, Divergent Capital, Day One Ventures, Third Sphere, Pure Ventures, and Gratitude Railroad.
The funds will be used in the company's pilot program that involves 200 porta-potties on construction sites in Burlington, Vermont. Solid waste from the retrofitted porta-potties will be transported to a nearby Williston facility and processed into a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to reduce phosphorus run-off.
Founded in 2020, Wasted, a company based in Burlington, Vermont, collects human waste from portable toilets and converts it into fertilizer via a nutrient-recovery process. Wasted's porta-potties—which cost USD 200—are a type of "container-based sanitation." Wasted is also interested in other venues with portable toilets, such as camping grounds, concerts, and outdoor events. The company plans to expand into a second city in 2024. In addition, the company intends to tailor its fertilizer to local needs and has filed a patent for a toilet that can separate liquids from solids.
