The Department of Energy (DOE) has committed a USD 2 billion loan to Redwood Materials to construct and expand its battery recycling facility west of Reno, Nevada.
The facility would process scrap from automobile production and end-of-life electric vehicle batteries to produce anode copper foils and cathode-active materials for new EV battery cells. Redwood Materials already has a prototype plant in Nevada to produce anode copper foils.
This is part of DOE’s initiative to encourage the development of more than 1 million EVs annually.
