Here Not There Labs, a developer of decentralized chat protocols, raised USD 25 million in a Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Benchmark and Framework Ventures.
The company plans to utilize the fresh capital to build its Web3 group chat protocol and app, Towns.
Towns provides an end-to-end encrypted chat protocol that enables communities to create programmable and self-governed "town squares" that allow users to meet and communicate without issues of the app owner blocking access, profiting from the activities, or changing user rights. In addition, the company seeks to launch an app that offers encrypted chat services along with the protocol.
Formed in 2020, Here Not There Labs was formed by Ben Rubin, former CEO and co-founder of Houseparty and Meerkat, and Brian Meek, former CTO of STRIVR Labs and former GM of Engineering at Skype.
