Relativity Space, a space travel and launch services provider, aborted the maiden launch attempt of its Terran 1 rocket. The company did not disclose if they will be attempting a re-launch immediately.
According to company sources, the call to scrub was made due to the second-stage propellant exceeding criteria limits for thermal conditions. The Terran 1 rocket was not carrying any payloads onboard and was purely a validation mission as the company carried on the development of the Terran R rocket.
Standing at 110 ft tall, 85% of the Terran 1 rocket is 3D-printed mass with Relativity Space expecting to increase this value as far as 95%.
Analyst QuickTake: In its last funding round, Relativity Space raised USD 650 million in a Series E funding round with the company receiving a post-money valuation of USD 4.2 billion. The funds were expected to be deployed for scaling the Terran R program. Following this, in October 2022, the company unveiled its Stargate fourth-generation 3D printer , capable of printing up to four Terran R rockets. Given the Terran 1 launch was expected to act as a validation mission for the Terran R program, Relativity Space is likely to face delays unless they move ahead with a relaunch as soon as possible.
