Amprius selects a site in Colorado for its next battery manufacturing factory

Geographic expansion

  • Amprius Technologies, an NYSE-listed company developing silicon anodes for lithium-ion batteries, selected a 775,000 sq. ft. site in Brighton, Colorado to be its next manufacturing plant for lithium-ion batteries.

  • The factory, which is expected to be operational in 2025, will be built in phases. The initial phase will be a capacity of 500 MWh with an overall potential of up to 5 GWh within the initial footprint. Additional space at the site shows a total potential manufacturing capacity of 10 GWh in subsequent phases.

  • The company chose the location due to it being a 1.3 million sq. ft. existing factory site with a suitable structural layout ideal for a gigawatt-hour scale lithium-ion battery factory. Other benefits include close proximity to essential materials and critical transportation infrastructure.

  • Additionally, to increase the focus on product and technology development and growth on a manufacturing scale, Amprius formed two business units. First, Amprius Fab (Brighton, Colorado) will focus on large-scale manufacturing of silicon anode batteries. Second, Amprius Lab (Fremont, California) will focus on advanced battery technology, product, and manufacturing process development.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Amprius is funding the initial phase of 500 MWh partly through the USD 50 million cost-sharing grant awarded in October 2022 by the US Department of Energy’s Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC). This funding was part of the first phase of a total of USD 7 billion in grants to be given by the US Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to expand domestic manufacturing of EV batteries and electrical grid batteries in the US.
