Online, virtual competitive running and cycling app Zwift has raised USD 450 million. New investors included Amazon Alexa Fund and Zero 5 Ventures, while existing investors Highland Europe, Novator, Causeway Media and True also participated in the round.
Zwift plans to introduce its own indoor bike and other hardware using the funding, and intends to expand its coverage by introducing ofther gamified sporting activities.
The latest funding round brings the total funding raised by the startup to USD 620 million, with a valuation of over USD 1 billion.
As of September 2020, Zwift has 2.5 million subscribers in 190 countries. The startup hosted a virtual tour de France in September 2020 where 117,000 subscribers completed the race. Later in the year the startup plans to host the inaugural UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) Cycling Esports World Championships.
Ilkka Paananen, the co-founder and CEO of Finnish gaming company Supercell joined Zwift as an investor and board member in the funding round.
