Via, the developer of mobility platform Transit Tech, announced acquiring Citymapper, a UK-based leading transport planning app, for an undisclosed amount.
The acquisition of Citymapper allows Via to integrate the product into its TransitTech platform, enabling cities and transit agencies to create responsive transit networks that are smart and multi-modal. Data will be used to enhance performance, and Citymapper's optimized experience for riders will be included.
The Citymapper app will continue to operate as a standalone service in the immediate future and be available to its users worldwide, as Via expects to expand its global reach following the acquisition. In addition, the entirety of Citymapper’s team is expected to join Via.
Analyst QuickTake: The acquisition of Citymapper, one of the most popular transport planning apps for an allegedly low valuation underlies the challenges facing the B2C transport planning app segment where the firm has experienced declining revenue, resulting in a shift in its focus to the enterprise segment . Via’s acquisition builds on its previous acquisition of Remix, a transport planning solution in March 2021, where Via aims to enhance its capabilities and offer an end-to-end Transit Tech solution. By leveraging these solutions, the company seeks to improve its planning abilities, offer reliable and user-friendly transportation services, and reduce operational costs.
