CharTech Solutions, a division of Canada-based cleantech development and services company CHAR Technologies, has partnered with Synagro Technologies, a provider of biosolid and residual solutions services, to demonstrate CharTech Solutions’ proprietary high-temperature pyrolysis (HTP) process in removing “Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances” (PFAS) from biosolids, while producing renewable energy and biochar for wastewater treatment facilities across North America.
HTP technology is a process that converts organic waste into renewable outputs by heating biosolids at high temperatures without oxygen. The process can destroy PFAS contaminants, produce biochar, and generate a high-calorific value syngas rich in hydrogen. This syngas can be used for industrial processes, heat generation, and renewable electricity generation, reducing the reliance on natural gas.
For the past three years, the two companies have collaborated to test and implement HTP technology for biosolids to eliminate PFAS contaminants. Now, they are moving forward to deploy and demonstrate the biosolids treatment technology at Synagro's sites to verify the effectiveness of HTP for commercial-scale applications.
