VR medical headset manufacturer Ocutrx announced its acquisition of Spectrum Advance Manufacturing Technologies, an electronics manufacturing and assembly company. The cost of the acquisition remained undisclosed.
The mid-cap acquisition will allow Ocutrx to obtain greater control of its supply chain and utilize Spectrum’s infrastructure to produce its OcuLenzTM AR medical headsets, in compliance with FDA standards within the US. Further, the acquisition will enable Ocutrx to expand its products' applications by working with Spectrum’s Fortune 500 clients in non-medical verticals, including aerospace, robotics, 5G, 5G-MEC, automotive, gaming, and the XR defense markets.
Ocutrx specializes in the creation of AR headsets for medical purposes, targeted toward users with moderate to severe Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), low-vision centers, and retinal surgeons. AR headsets manufactured include the ORLenz and the Oculuz AR wear glasses. Other products produced by Ocutrx include its OR-Bot, a collection of Ocutrx products that operates within a 3D pipeline and SteroLenz (a 3D Monitor), among others.
Spectrum Advanced Manufacturing Technologies offers electronic manufacturing and assembly services, specializing in high-reliability hardware, NPI support, microelectronics, wiring and harnessing, and assembly for Fortune 500 aerospace contractors, having worked on many defense, NASA, and commercial space flight programs.
Analyst QuickTake: Ocutrx has made its first acquisition, enabling the company to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and broaden its market reach. This move will also help improve the price competitiveness of its flagship OcuLenz AR glasses, launched in February 2019 at a retail price of USD 6,000. Additionally, the company obtained three patents in November 2021 and focused on expanding the field of view (FOV) for its AR headset.
