Rocket Lab, a space travel and launch company, has introduced the HASTE (hypersonic accelerator suborbital test electron) rocket, a suborbital testbed launch vehicle for hypersonic test flights.
Based on the building blocks of Rocket Lab’s heritage Electron rocket, HASTE will provide high-cadence flight test opportunities for hypersonic system technology development and is slated to have its maiden launch in 1H 2023 for an undisclosed customer.
Similar to the Electron rocket, HASTE also features a carbon composite structure and 3D-printed Rutherford engines, with the addition of a modified kick stage for hypersonic payload development and an increased payload capacity of up to 700 kg.
HASTE will mainly operate under Rocket Lab’s defense services subsidiary, Rocket Lab National Security (RLNS), and has already been selected for hypersonic testing initiatives by the Department of Defense (DOD) and Defense Innovation Unit (DIU).
