VR headset manufacturer Pimax announced plans to ship its hybrid VR headset, the “Pimax Portal,” to Kickstarter backers from April 2023 onwards.
The device, which doubles as a Nintendo Switch-style handheld console and a Samsung Gear VR-style headset, comes with Switch-style controllers and a dedicated VR shell housing. The Portal offers 6DoF tracking, a 4K screen resolution at a 144 Hz refresh rate, and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 processor. The company also plans to offer support for over 20 VR games by the end of May, as well as the ability to stream PC VR content via Wi-Fi and USB-C.
Analyst QuickTake: Initially announced in November 2022 , with model prices ranging from USD 299–549, the Pimax Portal represents a divergence from the company’s standard VR headset offerings. The product attracted over USD 350,000 from backers in its 2022 Kickstarter campaign and was subsequently demoed at CES 2023 . The Portal was initially slated to ship in January 2023; however, hardware issues pushed this back to April 2023.
