Microsoft is developing an AI chip named “Athena” to train large language models and support the inference required for generative AI applications.
The company has reportedly been working on the development of Athena since 2019, and is accelerating its development following its successful partnership with OpenAI. It hopes that the new chip would outperform the chips it currently buys from other vendors.
Analyst QuickTake: Microsoft was one of the early investors in OpenAI , the developer of ChatGPT (a generative AI model), having made a capital injection of USD 1 billion in July 2019. The company subsequently increased its investment with a multi-year USD 10 billion investment and established a strategic partnership with OpenAI in January 2023. As part of this collaboration, Microsoft integrated ChatGPT into its Bing search engine and incorporated it into its suite of Microsoft Office software.
