Magic Leap announced that its Magic Leap 2 headset now supports OpenXR, an open standard that aims to standardize the development of VR and AR applications. The company had planned to deliver OpenXR support last year although it was delayed until now.
Enterprises can transition existing platforms optimized for use on the Magic Leap 2, allowing for their solutions to be scaled. Furthermore, OpenXR allows smaller developers to distribute their solutions to a range of XR platforms without the use of extensive resources.
Analyst QuickTake: Magic Leap customers have access to a wider range of VR applications as a result of OpenXR adoption, with ByteDance subsidiary Pico Interactive also adopting the OpenXR protocol for its headsets in February 2023 . As to whether Apple would announce OpenXR support for its upcoming MR headset or create its own protocols remains uncertain.
