TransAstra, an orbital logistics company, has been awarded a Phase One Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the US Space Force to explore new applications for its proprietary, propellant-agnostic Omnivore thruster for government and commercial customers.
The Omnivore thruster claims to be faster and less expensive than electric propulsion systems and uses concentrated sunlight to superheat propellant and create thrust. Further, it can use ordinary tap water or other non-toxic fluids as propellant, making it a clean, safe, and affordable alternative.
This contract will allow TransAstra to further develop, test, and optimize the Omnivore thruster for the space ecosystem and provide an alternative to large-rocket rideshares. The Omnivore thruster was initially designed to power TransAstra’s Worker Bee space tugs to enable faster deployment of satellite constellations.
