Astroscale, a Japanese in-orbit servicing company, has partnered with Share My Space, a French space surveillance startup, to enhance space object surveillance and mitigate collision risks.
Share My Space will utilize its ground-based sensors to gather optical data in low-Earth orbit (LEO) to determine rotation rates and tumbling axis analyses of space objects, aiding the identification of potential risks and mitigation of space collisions.
The partnership is a part of Astrocale’s ongoing efforts to minimize space debris and aligns with the United Nations' guidelines for long-term space activity sustainability. Moreover, It will allow the company to gather crucial information for mission planning and safe debris removal.
Analyst QuickTake: Due to the advancement in the space tech industry, the number of space debris has significantly increased over the last few years. An estimated 25,000 objects larger than 10 cm, 500,000+ objects between one to 10 cm, and 100 million+ objects less than 1 cm are said to be in near-Earth orbit, which can pose issues for satellites, astronauts, and mission planners that could disrupt the internet, weather, and communication services. Apart from Astroscale, Orbit Guardians and ClearSpace are two companies actively engaged in space debris removal.
