Polystyvert, a Montreal-based company that recycles polystyrene using Polystyvert’s dissolution technology, has announced the construction of its first full-scale commercial plant to produce recycled polystyrene in Greater Montreal.
The USD 40 million plant, supported by two blue-chip partners and others, will annually recycle 9,000 tons of highly contaminated post-consumer and post-industrial polystyrene waste, equivalent to 15% of the polystyrene buried in Quebec each year.
Polystyvert has also announced the construction of a USD 3 million pilot plant at its R&D center in eastern Montreal for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), a thermoplastic polymer extensively used in the automotive, electronics, and toy industries. The company has successfully completed the initial stages of technology adaptation, supported financially by a renowned global partner.
Founded in 2011, Polystyvert is a polystyrene recycling company that uses its proprietary dissolution recycling process to recycle plastic waste that is typically considered non-recyclable due to high contamination. The company claims that the recycled polystyrene material is of unparalleled purity, capable of replacing virgin plastics and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%. As of date, the company’s technology has been patented in over 20 countries, offering sustainable alternatives to virgin plastics in various industries, including electronics, toys, packaging, and automotive. The company's business model revolves around selling licenses for its proprietary technology.
