Meta has announced plans to introduce new Meta accounts specifically for children between the ages of ten and 12, lowering the previous minimum age of 13. These accounts, which are set to roll out later this year, will allow parents to manage their children's Meta accounts, including controlling which VR apps they can download and usage durations.
The parent-managed accounts will offer age-appropriate content, with app age recommendations provided by the IARC. While Meta will collect data from these users, it will not serve ads and it commits to deleting the data if the Meta account is deleted. These accounts will be available for Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3. However, the minimum age for using Meta's proto-metaverse, Meta Horizon Worlds, remains at 13 in North America and 18 in Europe. The move to lower the minimum age aims to attract a larger customer base and report better usage statistics while addressing the popularity of VR among children.
