Meta approaches Tencent to bring Quest headsets to China

Industry news

  • Meta reportedly faces challenges in introducing its Quest headsets to the Chinese market due to past criticisms of the country's government. The company has reached out to Tencent Holdings for assistance entering the market, with over 1.4 billion potential consumers.

  • Despite these efforts, Chinese business leaders are reportedly hesitant to collaborate with Zuckerberg due to his previous allegations of technology theft by Chinese businesses and criticisms of TikTok. This hesitance could potentially complicate obtaining necessary licenses and approvals for Meta's products and services in China.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Meta’s partnership with Tencent was initially reported in February 2023 , when the companies had been collaborating to localize and adapt Meta’s software offerings to the Chinese market, coming on the back of Tencent abandoning its plans to develop its own VR headset and layoffs to its XR division.
