Sony announced the launch of mocopi, a mobile motion capture system for digital avatars in VR, priced at USD 449.
“Mocopi,” available in the US, uses six compact sensors and a dedicated smartphone app to enable full-body motion tracking, freeing users from using base stations traditionally required for tracking. The system provides ~10 hours of battery life and allows users, including VTubers and creators in film or animation, to capture and export motion data or avatar videos in real time. Creators can record a Full HD video of their avatars at 30 frames per second or send motion data to compatible third-party software at 50 fps for real-time interaction with VR environments. Additionally, the mocopi software development kit (SDK) is compatible with major 3D development software, including Unity, allowing developers to utilize motion data for various applications.
Notably, Sony’s press release lacks clarity on whether the Mocopi system can connect directly to a VR headset or PC without the smartphone app—and does not mention finger tracking, suggesting users may need VR controllers or a Leap Motion tracker for this functionality.
