London-based Sandbox & Co., an operator of edutainment products, acquired San Francisco-based Fingerprint, a digital content developer for children and families. The acquisition combines Sandbox’s portfolio of global brands with Fingerprint’s content and subscription expertise. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The acquisition led to the formation of the Sandbox Kids division, which will be led by Nancy MacIntyre. Sandbox Kids products include existing Sandbox brands Hopster (for ages 1 to 4), Curious World (for ages 4 to 8), and Fingerprint’s Kidomi (for ages 3 to 12). The products can be used across any device or platform and allow for localization. Together these products offer more than 8,000 videos, games, interactive books, songs, podcasts, and audio stories in 23 languages across more than 100 countries. Combined, they report more than 7 million app downloads with more than 500,000 monthly users (families).
Sandbox will continue to produce original content through Hopster Studios, which partners with more than 200 content creators in more than 60 countries.
Founded in 2010, Fingerprint provides a learning platform for children (“Kidomi”) and curates content for customers. Customers in the technology, edutainment, and broadcast fields license Kidomi and use the company’s content solutions to provide customized products to their own clients.
Founded in 2015, Sandbox & Co. operates a suite of 13 education brands designed for Pre-K and K-8 students, parents, and teachers organized into three verticals: Sandbox Gaming (CoolMathGames, Poptropica, and Code Kingdoms), Sandbox Kids (Curious World, Hopster, and Kidomi), and Sandbox Learning (Tinybop, Family Education, TeacherVision, Teachit, Fact Monster, InfoPlease, and Funbrain).
Since its founding, the company has acquired 13 digital learning products with plans for further growth. Recent acquisitions include London-based Code Kingdoms, which teaches 8 to 14 year-olds how to code using Minecraft and Roblox (acquired in March 2021), and Bath-based Teachit, a teacher resource provider (acquired in September 2020). As of March 2021, Sandbox users numbered in excess of 55 million.
