Mobileye launches world’s first camera-only intelligent speed assist system to meet new EU GSR standards

Product updates

  • Mobileye, an Intel subsidiary developing automated and autonomous driving tech, has developed the world's first camera-only intelligent speed assist (ISA) solution for automakers, including truck manufacturers, to meet the EU General Safety Regulation (GSR) standards without relying on third-party map and GPS data.

  • The solution utilizes computer vision and machine-learning technologies and is reportedly capable of accurately detecting speed limits and providing alerts to drivers when the limits are exceeded.

  • The ISA system, designed for Mobileye's “EyeQ” platform (which provides the processing power to support automated driving functions), has been certified in all 27 EU countries, as well as Israel, Norway, Switzerland, and Turkey. Existing vehicles with EyeQ4 and EyeQ6 chips can meet the new standards by updating their software without new hardware.

  • The Mobileye ISA system is expected to be integrated into two vehicle brands for European sale later this year, with three other global automakers to follow from 2024.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The new GSR came into force in the EU in July 2022, introducing mandatory advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS) to enhance road safety and establish the legal framework for automated and fully driverless vehicles. The new safety measures included ISA, reversing detection, attention warning, and emergency stop signal for all road vehicles, with additional features like lane-keeping systems and automated braking for cars and vans, and technologies to recognize blind spots and prevent collisions with pedestrians and cyclists for buses and trucks.
