Electric vehicle and clean energy company Tesla has reportedly partnered with Samsung to manufacture its driving assistance technology “Full Self-Driving” (FSD)'s next-generation chips.
The next generation of “Hardware 5” (HW 5.0) chips will be developed using Samsung’s 4-nanometer node, with Tesla planning to start mass production of the HW 5.0 system in three to four years.
Tesla initially partnered with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to produce HW 5.0 automotive chips last year, but now it’s not clear whether the company will collaborate with both Samsung and TSMC or opt out of TMSC entirely.
Analyst QuickTake: Tesla has been developing its own custom self-driving chip since 2016, and it was unveiled as part of the HW 3.0 self-driving computer in 2019. The company previously worked with Samsung on HW 3.0 and was rumored to have collaborated with the same on HW 4.0 as well. The company introduced the HW 4.0 system to the market earlier this year, and it’s interesting to note Tesla already working on the next generation.
