Google halts Project Iris; shifts focus to AR software development

Product updates

  • Google's latest venture into AR, Project Iris, has been discontinued, marking another setback in the company's attempts to establish a foothold in the AR market. Project Iris was an AR headset, intended to compete with similar products from companies like Meta and Apple. The decision to halt the project follows the discontinuation of Google Glass Enterprise earlier in 2023.

  • Project Iris was envisioned as a significant improvement in AR technology, with a design more akin to ski goggles than traditional glasses and powered by an unspecified processor for enhanced AR experiences. The headset was intended to feature proprietary technology, such as automated translation and built-in navigation features. However, the project faced challenges from the start, including significant layoffs in the technology industry and the departure of key personnel. In response to these setbacks, Google has shifted its focus to developing software for AR, which it plans to license and sell to other AR creators.
