Gr3n Recycling, a Switzerland-based PET recycling company using microwave-assisted depolymerization (MADE), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with its shareholder Intecsa Industrial, a leading Spanish engineering company, to set up a joint venture to build a MADE-based production facility in Spain.
The facility will process post-industrial and post-consumer PET waste to produce around 40,000 tons of virgin PET chips from recycled monomers, saving nearly two million tons of CO2 during its operating life. The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) phase will start in Q4 2024 and is scheduled to be operational in 2027.
Founded in 2011, Gr3n Recycling has developed a process based on the application of microwave technology to alkaline hydrolysis for recycling PET. The Gr3n process breaks down any type of PET and polyester plastic into its two core components, purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG), which can then be reassembled to obtain virgin-like plastics. The company operates a demo plant in Chieti, Italy.
