Pony.ai, a China- and US-based self-driving vehicle technology company, has announced a USD 139 million (CNY 1 billion) joint venture (JV) with Toyota Motor to produce robotaxis, collaborating with Toyota's partnership with Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC).
The newly formed company, set to begin operations this year, will utilize GAC-Toyota's manufacturing capabilities to produce Toyota electric vehicles (EVs) integrated with Pony.ai's ride-hailing software.
Pony.ai, active in both China and the US, has already deployed robotaxis in cities including Beijing , Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai.
Analyst QuickTake: This JV marks a significant step in the ongoing collaboration between Pony.ai and Toyota, who joined forces in 2019 to develop autonomous vehicles for deployment in China, with Toyota also having invested substantial funds in Pony.ai over the years.
