The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) announced it had resolved disagreements between national data privacy agencies over an investigation into TikTok's handling of children's and teens' data.
The announcement stems from an investigation launched by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), TikTok’s EU home regulator, in 2021, probing TikTok’s adherence to guidelines set by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), focusing on default privacy settings and age verification. The case was referred to the EDPB following disagreements between the DPC and the German and Italian privacy agencies on the handling of the matter.
The EDPB decision requires the Irish authority to adopt a final ruling and issue a penalty within one month. According to reports, TikTok will face a fine in early September.
