Game studio Windup Minds raised USD 1.6 million in a pre-seed funding round led by The Venture Reality Fund, Acequia Capital, and New Leaf Ventures, with contributions from industry leaders such as Nate Mitchell (founder, Oculus), and Eden Chen (founder, Pragma; Riot Games), among others.
The company plans to use the funding to develop virtual pet games for VR and MR, aiming to improve player interactions with virtual creatures by integrating the latest insights on animal cognition and emergent gameplay.
Windup Minds, with team members hailing from prominent gaming platforms like Oculus, Electronic Arts, Magic Leap, and Bungie, is focused on enhancing creature interaction in video games using XR technology. The studio aims to make virtual companions appear lifelike, with an example of their work, including a prototype where a creature remembers and returns to a specific spot to be fed, indicating its hunger by looking at the player.
