Byju’s acquires online tutoring platform HashLearn

M&A

  • Byju’s, an online educational platform, has reportedly acquired HashLearn, an online coaching platform that tutors students for competitive exams. The terms of the deal are yet unknown.

  • The acquisition, which has yet to be announced by Byju’s, was reportedly completed 2-3 months ago. HashLearn’s co-founders, Jayadev Gopalakrishnan and Gokul Janga, have joined as consultants for WhiteHat Jr., a platform offering online coding classes acquired by Byju’s.

  • For FY2020, HashLearn reported revenue of INR 2.4 million (approximately USD 33,000), a YoY decrease of 90%, and a loss of INR 35 million (around USD 480,000).

  • Founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran and Divya Gokulnath, Bangalore-based Think and Learn is an EdTech and online tutoring firm doing business as Byju’s. It is also India’s second-most-valuable startup. Byju’s offers online video-based learning programs for K-12 students and domestic and overseas exams. In 2015, the company launched “Byju's: The Learning App,” offering learning programs for students in grades 6-12. In 2017, it launched the K5 app for grades 4-5, and in 2019, it launched its early learning program for grades 1-3. In April 2021, Byju’s announced plans to expand to the US, the UK, Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico during the year. As of April 2021, Byju’s served more than 80 million users.
