General Motors' (GM's) autonomous car subsidiary Cruise and Alphabet-owned self-driving car unit Waymo have received the approval of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to offer a 24/7 paid taxi service in San Francisco.
The decision removes most of the limitations imposed on operating and charging for taxi services. However, Waymo and Cruise are required to report information such as mileage and collisions to regulatory bodies.
The companies were urged to address issues raised by the city officials related to traffic jams caused by autonomous vehicles blocking roads, and further incidents could lead to a limit on the number of autonomous vehicles imposed by the CPUC.
