ZeroAvia introduces world’s first compressor for aviation fuel cell systems

Product updates

  • ZeroAvia, a hydrogen-based aviation solutions developer, announced that it has developed the world's first high-performance compressor for fuel cell-based aviation propulsion systems.

  • The compressor is able to support up to 900 kW fuel-cell systems and is significantly more powerful than existing fuel-cell compressors. Furthermore, the product is designed to operate with zero latency through a flow management approach. The compressor will run on the power provided by the core electric propulsion system, thus eliminating the additional inverter and electric motor usually needed in fuel-cell systems. This provides ZeroAvia with reduced weight, greater reliability, and a reduction in complexity, which will aid to certify the company’s powertrains.

  • The company intends to incorporate the technology into its first two hydrogen-electric engines: The ZA600 for nine to 19 seat aircraft, which is to be in service by 2025, and the ZA2000 for 40–80 seat aircraft with which is to be launched in 2027. The company is set to begin certification testing for the compressor in 2024.
