Waymo to start charging for driverless robotaxi services in San Francisco

Product updates

  • Waymo, the self-driving tech development unit of Google's parent company Alphabet, has announced plans to start charging for driverless robotaxi rides in San Francisco, California from next week. The company has not disclosed the fee structure yet.

  • The customer will be notified of the trip cost before the ride is booked, and the fare will be based on the most direct route and may be higher during peak times. Its wheelchair-accessible vehicle ( WAV) service will remain free for the time being.

  • In comparison, General Motors’ (GM’s) autonomous car subsidiary, Cruise, charges a base fare of USD 5, with an additional charge of USD 0.90 per mile and USD 0.40 per minute. However, Cruise does not use a surge pricing structure.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Today’s news on commercial launch comes a week after Waymo and Cruise received permission from state authorities to launch commercial driverless robotaxi services 24/7 in the city. Waymo has been operating in San Francisco since late 2021 and started charging for driver-ed robotaxi services in March 2022 .
