OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace, announced that it would be discontinuing its Operator Filter tool, designed to enforce royalties for creators, effective from August 31.
The Operator Filter was launched In November 2022, with the aim of allowing NFT sales only on platforms that required creators to pay fees.
Starting August 31, the Operator Filter won't block any marketplaces, and non-Ethereum blockchain collections will have creator fees enforced until February 29, 2024. While the tool is removed, creator fees persist but won't be unilaterally enforced.
The company stated that the tool is being discontinued due to its lack of success and limited support from the NFT ecosystem. Some marketplaces like Blur, Dew, and LooksRare bypassed it using the Seaport Protocol to avoid creator fees. Creators also found it restrictive, conflicting with decentralized ownership.
