Plant-based food industry slams FDA’s plant-based milk draft labeling guidance

Regulation/policy
Industry news

  • The Plant-based Food Association (PBFA) recently responded to the FDA's draft guidance on labeling plant-based milk , describing it as ” unprecedented, unwarranted, and a solution in search of a problem ” and calling for its removal.

  • The PBFA submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to access the consumer research on which the guidelines are based, along with an assessment of the FDA’s conclusions written by Professor Joel H. Steckel of New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business.

  • The assessment criticizes six research papers cited in the guidance and questions their validity based on several findings, including a lack of science-backed conclusions, confirmation bias, and outdated research.
