Meta adds avatar legs in Beta to Quest Home

Product updates

  • Meta rolled out a Beta update for its Quest headsets, introducing legged avatars in Quest Home, the initial environment users encounter when activating their headset. Notably, the feature is not yet available in VR for Horizon Worlds.

  • Previously, Meta's virtual reality avatars were represented as floating torsos without legs. Although Quest headsets support hand tracking, they do not track leg and foot movements, making the creation of natural-feeling legged avatars challenging.

  • Early feedback indicates that these legs are only visible in third-person view, not first-person, to provide a less disorienting visual experience. Additionally, Meta may provide further details on this development at its upcoming Connect event in September.

  • Analyst QuickTake: The news follows Meta launching Beta tests of Horizon Worlds for mobile platforms . Mobile users can view their avatars in third person, which includes the appearance of legs. This is likely due to the ease of implementing full-body avatars, without the need for motion capture in the mobile version of the platform.
