China approves public rollout of GenAI services for several companies

Industry news

  • China has given approval for the first batch of GenAI services to be publicly rolled out, allowing companies like Baidu and SenseTime to offer GenAI services to the public, competing with global players such as OpenAI and Microsoft.

  • With this, Baidu has made ERNIE Bot, its GenAI product and large language model, generally available to the public.

  • Analysts QuickTake: This move marks a milestone for China's AI industry and its potential leaders, enabling them to compete with global tech giants. The new regulations require GenAI services to receive clearance before being accessible to domestic users.
