Three UK companies, Viritech, a hydrogen powertrains manufacturer, HORIBA MIRA, an automotive engineering and development consultancy company, and Intelligent Energy, a fuel-cell engineering company, are collaborating on a GBP 3 million (USD 3.8 million) project called ICEBreaker, funded by the UK's Advanced Propulsion Centre, to develop a competitive hydrogen fuel-cell-powered 44-tonne heavy-duty truck.
Viritech will lead the project by providing the hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain, while Intelligent Energy will contribute its latest fuel-cell technology designed for heavy-duty applications. HORIBA MIRA brings vehicle engineering expertise, including thermal systems modeling, engineering, systems integration, vehicle optimization, validation, and certification.
The project will focus on reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) for hydrogen fuel-cell trucks, with plans to create a digital twin of the ICEBreaker truck for pre-validation. The project is scheduled to commence in October 2023, aiming to deliver a working proof of concept in the short term.
