ABTC and partners set for circular battery production

Partnerships

  • American Battery Technology Company (ABTC), a Nasdaq-listed integrated battery materials supplier, has partnered with BASF, a battery materials producer, Nanotech Energy, a graphene energy storage company, and TODA Advanced Materials Inc., a manufacturer of precursor for cathode-active material, to create a closed-loop system for lithium-ion EV battery cells.

  • ABTC plans to recycle battery scrap and off-spec material from Nanotech’s pilot operation in California and its planned commercial facility. The battery-grade metals will be subsequently used by TODA and BASF to produce new precursors and cathode-active materials, respectively. Nanotech will then use these materials again in its battery cell production.

  • The partnership’s aim is to reduce the CO2 impact of batteries by around 25% compared to when primary metals are used. Commercial production of the closed-loop cycle is set to begin in 2024.
