GM’s Cruise unveils wheelchair-accessible robotaxi to be launched in 2024

Product updates

  • General Motors' (GM's) autonomous car subsidiary, Cruise, has revealed a custom-built wheelchair-accessible robotaxi, Cruise WAV, with plans to launch the unit in 2024. The company plans to commence closed-coursed testing of the unit in October 2023.

  • The new robotaxi is a modified version of Cruise's fully driverless “Origin” vehicles (with no steering wheels and pedals), with added features such as a retractable ramp, increased space inside, and floor clamps for wheelchair users.

  • Analyst QuickTake: In the race for autonomous vehicle accessibility, Cruise's new wheelchair-accessible robotaxi marks a promising step forward. However, in comparison, Cruise’s major competitor and self-driving tech development of Alphabet, Waymo, already offers robotaxi rides with wheelchair-accessible features to support riders with accessibility needs.
